Positive Body Image Boudoir Session

Positive Body Image Boudoir Session

|Positive Body Image Boudoir Session|  If you’ve ever walked through my front door you have seen yourself in the BEST mirror EVER! It makes you taller and thinner! It’s freaking amazing! All my friends LOVE it. A while back I was getting ready to meet with my photography wife, Sami Roy, for breakfast. I was checking myself out in the mirror and thought to myself “I should go upstairs and look in the “regular” mirror so as not to leave the house with a false sense of how I REALLY look.” I stopped, that made me wonder- when was the last time I looked at myself and had an actual positive thought about my appearance that didn’t involve the magical mirror? I couldn’t think of one time. Those thoughts rolled around in my head for a few days then they slowly snowballed into what would become the first of many Positive Body Image Sessions from The Magnolia House Studio.

I placed a model call of sorts. I wanted a diverse group of women. I wanted all different shapes sizes ethnicities, backgrounds and lifestyles. Well over 30 women applied in my private Facebook group, SSP VIP Ladies. I selected 10 ladies for the session. We had women drop out last minute for a range of reasons and that was FINE! I knew myself how gut wrenching this was going to be because I had planned to get into the photograph too. I was scared shitless.

The day came and no matter what- this shoot was happening! And it did- OMFG- it did! Everyone got their makeup done at our beautiful staging venue, The Studio Hampton Roads, then arrived at the photoshoot location. My first gal bravely ditched her street clothes and slipped into something sexier. All the while the other ladies were frantically cheering her on! It was amazing to hear the shouts of encouragement from the other models. This went on for close to an hour and a half, brave beautiful woman after brave beautiful woman stepping in front of my camera for their mini while everyone ran to bring changes of clothing, blot makeup, fix hair and yes- yell funny and encouraging things to each other.

Time for the group shot! The ladies were truly feeling themselves at this point. I noticed they all stood just a little taller and when I gathered them for the first setup they naturally touched and leaned on one another. It was like magic.

Next thing I knew it was time for the topless shot. Y’all I was fucking SWEATING! I was hot, my makeup was loooong gone, my hair a mess. I was frazzled and I was scared to death because I promised to be in this shot. As I was setting everyone up and getting the camera settings ready the ladies yelled for me to “Take it off!” *sigh* I did. Then I had to RUN over to the spot and remove my bra, cover myself appropriately and pray everything was ready for Carly to take that shot for me.

I wish I could say that I loved my photos (I do- I’m mad at my hair and melted makeup ha ha ha!!). I wish I could say that EVERY beautiful lady that volunteered loved their individual photos. We are all critical of ourselves, we’re human, we’re flawed. But we ALL showed up and showed out. For that I am proud of myself and even more so proud of these ladies!

We are all far too hard on ourselves. We are all far too hard on each other. But in the end- we need to give ourselves and each other a break and decide to be accepting of ourselves and each other. We must be each other’s cheerleaders. We need to present ourselves with respect, with kindness and most importantly CONFIDENCE! If we can do that then we won’t need magic mirrors.

Here are a few words from the beautiful ladies that participated. I have never been so proud of anything I’ve ever done. I’ve shed a few tears working on this. The ladies and I hope that this resonates with you and encourages you to step out of your comfort zone every now and again, love yourself just a little bit more and lift up not only the lady in line in front of you but the one you see in the mirror too.

Have you ever done anything like this before? No first time
What was your favorite part about the positive body image session? Loved the group photo and the way we posed.
What do you hope people who see these photos will gain from it? Confidence, empowerment, women supporting women
If someone was to participate in a session like this, what would be your words of encouragement? Just relax, be yourself, Shawn makes you feel so comfortable! I took my bra off in the middle of a sunflower field!
Do you see yourself any differently after this experience? Yes, more confident!

Have you ever done anything like this before? No, I haven’t.
What made you want to participate?   The thought of being about to show people that bodies come in all shapes and sizes really spoke volumes to me. I was so thankful to be apart of that.
What was your favorite part about the positive body image session?  How everyone cheered everyone on!! So so so empowering/awesome to hear cheering from women you just met!
What do you hope people who see these photos will gain from it?  That they’re beautiful! No matter your size, skin color, age. You. Are. Beautiful.
If someone was to participate in a session like this, what would be your words of encouragement?  Yassss honey!!! You got this!!!
Do you see yourself any differently after this experience? Omg, yes. I was feeling insecure that I hadn’t lost any weight before the session like I wanted. I realized that I didn’t have too. I LOVE my body in theses photos. I cried when I saw them. Thank you for letting me be apart of this.  I’m honored. Thank you for helping me see that my body is beautiful the way it is. The photos are stunning. You’re amazing. ❤️

What made you want to participate?  The opportunity to show any woman out there that confidence isn’t defined by size or shape but instead by a positive mindset.
What was your favorite part about the positive body image session? For me personally, it was being able to stand nearly nude hand in hand with strangers without worrying. The amount of support surrounding us was palpable.
What do you hope people who see these photos will gain from it?  The confidence to see themselves for exactly who they are and embrace it. Fuck the stretch marks, fuck the rolls – we all deserve to love our own bodies.
If someone was to participate in a session like this, what would be your words of encouragement? Don’t think, just do. If you think you want to participate, do it.
Do you see yourself any differently after this experience?  No. But I do see more so how my actions can make others see themselves differently.

What made you want to participate?  I believe that self-love and body positivity is so important. I’ve experienced such a roller coaster journey finding love for myself. I believe that if I can help one person through my story – then it was worth it.
What was your favorite part about the positive body image session?  My favorite part was the connection I felt with the other models. Everyone was so supportive and uplifting. It was wonderful connecting with other incredible women who wanted to be a part of something special.
What do you hope people who see these photos will gain from it?  I hope someone will look at the photos and recognize a body that looks like theirs – and feel beautiful because of it.
If someone was to participate in a session like this, what would be your words of encouragement?  Don’t wait until you lose weight, or your skin clears up, or you feel “ready”. You’re already amazing – right now. Don’t wait for the right time, now is the right time.
Do you see yourself any differently after this experience?  I feel really proud of myself for being vulnerable on camera. I feel that it’s really easy to build others up but can be challenging to do for myself. I’m glad I took the risk and braved some of my fears.

Have you ever done anything like this before? Not a positivity session, but I’ve done boudoir sessions just to up my self-esteem and for me.
What was your favorite part about the positive body image session? Watching all the ladies transform and become more comfortable in their skin while around each other.  Everyone seemed to bond, and it was really wonderful to witness.
If someone was to participate in a session like this, what would be your words of encouragement? Go into it with an open mind and remember you are beautiful no matter what.
Do you see yourself any differently after this experience?  I felt refreshed and new afterward.

What made you want to participate? I work out and eat very well and my figure is still very curvy and soft. I wanted to show my unique body and all its rolls and bumps.
What was your favorite part about the positive body image session? The people! So many wonderful women.
What do you hope people who see these photos will gain from it?  Confidence to get that boudoir done. That they don’t have to lose weight or gain weight or do anything to change themselves to appreciate their body.
If someone was to participate in a session like this, what would be your words of encouragement? Take that bra off! Boobs are all sort of different shapes and sizes and it’s okay to have small, large, saggy, flat, lopsided breasts! Or no breast at all!
Do you see yourself any differently after this experience?  I do. It’s been hard fighting with the mirror after a hard year of sadness. I feel good.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to the hardest working makeup artists in Hampton Roads. Without you I truly don’t believe that this shoot would have gone off as well as it did. You kept me on time, on point and sane.
